This collection includes yearbooks and academic catalogs housed in the Athens State University Library Archives. The yearbook was known as the Oracle from 1908-1914; then changed name to Maid of Athens from 1923-1931; then changed name to Columns from 1941-1980. No yearbooks were published 1932-1940, 1943-1947, and 1981-present. The institution has served under 13 different names since its beginning in 1822 as Athens Female Academy; 1843 as Athens Female Institute of the Tennessee Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church; 1850 as Athens Female Institute of the Tennessee Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South; 1858 as Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South Female Institute; 1870 as North Alabama Female College; 1872 as Athens Female Institute; 1889 as Athens Female College; 1903 as Athens Female College of the Alabama Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South; 1905 as Athens Female College; 1915 as Athens College for Young Women; 1931 as Athens College; 1976 as Athens State College; and since 1998 is known as Athens State University.
